Asa Smith Mission

In 1838, Asa and Sarah Smith established a mission near Kamiah to work with the nimíipuu. Asa took the important step of writing the first Nez Perce dictionary and grammar book, preserving words and language that might otherwise have been lost.

Getting There

A historical marker for the Asa Smith Mission is located on U.S. Highway 12, approximately one mile east of Kamiah, Idaho. From Kamiah, turn right onto U.S. Highway 12 East and continue for 1.3 miles. The pullout will be on your right.

What You'll See

The actual mission site is located about two miles upstream from the pullout on private land that is not accessible to the public. The roadside pullout offers an interpretive sign that explains Asa Smith's work with the Nez Perce and his contributions to preserving their language.

At the same pullout, you'll find a marker for Lewis and Clark's Long Camp. The Nez Perce National Historical Park visitor center is about 55 miles southeast and has more information about the mission era.
