Visit Canoe Camp

Canoe Camp is where the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery worked alongside the Nez Perce to carve the canoes that would carry them to the Pacific Ocean in 1805. A short trail and interpretive signs mark this important meeting place.

Getting There

Canoe Camp is adjacent to the Clearwater River approximately 4 miles west of Orofino, Idaho along US Highway 12. The site address is 14224 US 12, Orofino, ID 83554.

From Orofino, head north on Main Street toward Michigan Avenue. Turn left onto Michigan and cross the bridge. Turn right onto US-12 West (toward Lewiston) and continue 4.1 miles. Canoe Camp will be on the left.

What You'll See

The 4.1-acre site includes a short interpretive hiking trail with signs explaining Canoe Camp and the Corps' interaction with the Nez Perce. A nearby feature is Dworshak Dam and Reservoir, just 2 miles upstream, which offers additional recreational opportunities including fishing, boating, hiking, and a fish hatchery.

Restrooms are available at the site. This is a quieter spot for reflection on the meeting between two cultures and the journey the Corps undertook with Nez Perce assistance.

The Nez Perce National Historical Park visitor center is approximately 30 miles west in Lapwai, where you can learn more about the broader history of this contact and its significance.
